I am a Obama supporter and I support his health care plan with a public option, let me make that clear from the beginning. I am also mystified and disappointed about the way this administration has let the health care debate get away from them and land in the hands of the right wing crazies. Among other things, this administration was elected because of its promise to reform the health care system in this country. Up until Feb of this year over 70% were in favor of this change. I think the administration relied heavily on the American people being reasonable, intelligent and pragmatic enough to realize and understand what they were presenting and what needed to be done to fix and reform the system. They didn't factor in gullibility and fear and didn't counter the right wing lies and distortions effectively. Another miscalculation was that they thought some Republicans were sincere and would actually help reform the system. But to Republicans the issue has never been about reform but winning and losing. They never wanted bi-parrtisanship on anything. They made it very clear in word and deed that they wanted Obama to fail. He was the only one making concessions and even when he did they would continue to fight him.
Obama needs to change course immediately by first making it clear to Republicans that the Democratic party is in charge and are now running the show. He also needs to crack a few heads within his own party and get them in line with the agenda and show some solidarity. The administration is rapidly losing support for its policies and the President's popularity is also waning. At this stage of the game the right will criticize whatever he does or attempts to do. If the Right wing wins the health debate they will say the President is weak and not a strong leader; if the President wins and gets a public option they will say he's dictatorial.
Support for the President is leaving because people are sensing weakness. If you are going to go down you might as well go down fighting. Take a detour from the high road and climb down into the gutter where the fight is and get a little dirty. Turn supporters like Moveon.org loose and let them get into the fight. This is a defining moment and it must not be lost to the loudest voices or political concession and expediency.
